Actuality. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic demyelinating disease of the central nervous system. Patients with MS are faced with new living conditions under which the depression infringes adaptation processes and results in psychoemotional symptomatology aggravation. Objective – to study coping behavior in patients with MS and depressive disorders. Material and methods. 129 patients were enrolled in the study (89 women and 40 men) aged from 15 to 61 years with remitting and secondary – progressing type of MS course, disability degree upon EDSS scale – 3,5 ± 1,5 points. Results and discussion. Depression was revealed in 76,7 % women with MS: in the form of melancholic depression (in 35,1 %), apathetic-adynamic – in 34,4 %, neurotic – in 7,2 %. Depression incidence in men was amounting to 23,3 %, astenic type was revealed more frequently. Patients with MS without depression used adaptive strategies more frequently in the form of “optimism”, whereas persons with depression reacted upon the stress relatively adaptive and non-adaptive strategies. The most differences were singled out in the selection of emotionally oriented coping in the group of women with MS and depression – 42 ± 7,3, with focusing on own problem, feeling of helplessness and seeking for social support, they preferred non-adaptive strategies of stress control – «behavioral and cognitive escape» from the problem – 9 ± 2,85 and 9,90 ± 2,33. Conclusions. Depression changes the ways of responding to stressful situation in patients with MS, thus timely correction allows to exert some influence on coping and so promotes the improvement of the quality of life.
