Actuality – gestational weight increase is one of the important parameters which determine normal pregnancy course and its aftereffects for mothers and infants. Practically there are no reports concerning total health status of newborns and their mothers with excessive gestational weight. Objective – to reveal the peculiarities of health status in newborns in excessive gestational weight of their mothers. Material and methods. 76 matured newborns were enrolled in the study; they were subdivided into two groups: the main group was composed of the infants whose mothers had excessive gestational weight (n = 44) and the comparison group was formed of the infants whose mothers had normal gestational weight (n = 32). Medical documents and anamnesis of the patients were analyzed; their newborns were examined. Results and discussion. Women of the main group had significantly higher body mass index (p < 0,01) before pregnancy; 54 ones has excessive body mass and obesity. Pregnancy course was complicated by anemia, episodes of arterial pressure increase (p < 0,01), edema (p < 0,01) and preeclampsia development in 18,2 % cases. Newborns from this group had higher anthropometric parameters, lower indices upon APGAR scale on the first minute, they demonstrated signs of morphofunctional immaturity more frequently, higher maximal transitory body mass loss; skin hemorrhage syndrome took place more frequently and cephalohematoma was revealed 2,2 times more frequently. Conclusions. Excessive gestational weight resulted in complicated course of pregnancy and child birth. These newborns had high risk for birth traumatism and disturbances in postnatal adaptation process.
