Abstarct
To study various aspects of specific population groups’ readiness to provide first aid, including intellectual (necessary knowledge and skills) and psychological, is an important task nowadays. Both medical university students and residents are legally entitled to provide it in accordance with the legislation of the Russian Federation after mastering the disciplines of specialist programs with issues of providing first aid. However, research dedicated to residents’ readiness to provide first aid to children, and methodological approaches to improving readiness developed on their basis, is limited. Objective – to analyze residents’ preparedness for pediatric first aid to develop advanced methodological approaches for its improvement. Materials and Methods. An anonymous sociological investigation was performed using a specially designed questionnaire comprising closed-ended questions. The participants of the survey were residents undergoing training in specialties that grant access to medical practice in healthcare organizations (departments) serving the pediatric population (n = 75). The respondents’ self-assessment of the intellectual and psychological readiness for pediatric first aid, their knowledge and skills in it and its regulatory aspects, as well as the need for further training were analyzed. Statistical analysis was performed using the standard STATISTICA software package. Results and Discussion. The obtained data indicate an insufficient understanding of the essence and concept of first aid, its subjects, format, and conditions (24.0 % of respondents do not distinguish between the concepts of “first aid” and “medical assistance”, while 23.6 % incorrectly believe that the priority of providing first aid to children is not specified by the law). 42.7 % considered themselves fully prepared to provide first aid to children in any situation where it might be necessary, in terms of having the necessary knowledge and skills; 46.7% were psychologically prepared. 84.0 % of residents indicated the need for additional training to be fully prepared to provide first aid to children. Conclusion. Insufficient intellectual and psychological readiness (according to self-assessment), the knowledge level of modern regulatory, conceptual, and substantive aspects of first aid for children, as well as the skills to provide this aid necessitate the development of methodological approaches to enhance the readiness, including the university level, among some residents. The revealing of a significant proportion of respondents not considering their readiness, including the psychological one, to provide first aid to children, and those struggling to assess their level of knowledge and skills in these matters, was revealed. The latter dictates the need to strengthen motivational and informational work with students to foster an understanding of the status of this type of aid and their role in its provision. Such work should be carried out both during the study of disciplines that include first aid issues and within the framework of the university’s educational, civic-patriotic, and volunteer activities. The development and introduction of ‘supportive’ training on first aid issues for residents, with a focus on helping children, due to the identified need, is advisable.
