WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT PATIENTS WITH ATRIAL FIBRILLATION AND WHAT DO THEY KNOW ABOUT THEIR DISEASE?

Abstarct

Objective: to study the necessary knowledge level of patients with atrial fibrillation about the disease and skills for its self-control. Material and methods. 116 patients with atrial fibrillation (61 women and 55 men, average age - 60,6±8,4 years) who have been trained in “School for health in patients with atrial fibrillation”. Results and discussion. Initial level of patients’ knowledge before training was amounting to 4,4±2,3 points (low level), insufficient knowledge was revealed in 68,1% in all persons who took place in poll. Information concerning atrial fibrillation was presented mostly by doctors (64,7%) to their patients who were interested in treatment tactics in arrhythmia paroxysm (64,7%), causes of the disease onset (58,3%) and its treatment (57,8%). None of patients refused the training. Just after training the knowledge level in patients increased to 8,1±1,6 points (p < 0,05), in six months after training - to 6,6±1,7 points. Such training was conducive to obtain the necessary skills of self-control (skills for evaluation of pulse frequency&-rhythm, to keep the diary of self-control). Conclusions. Patients with atrial fibrillation were characterized by initially low knowledge level about the disease and simultaneously by high motivation in the training which might give stable positive effect for knowledge level increase and self-control skills mastering.
