- This prospective follow-up study was designed to compare the expected and observed cardiovascular risk in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The level of cardiovascular risk based on SCORE and SCORE/ EULAR risk scales was low (about 1% on average). The observed risk of cardiovascular events signifi cantly exceeded the expected risk. In fact, the risk of development of cardiovascular and/or cerebrovascular event during the 5-year follow-up was 12% (8% of this risk was due to cardiovascular events). Our fi ndings suggest that the use of traditional methods for cardiovascular risk assessment may be inadequate in RA and signify the need for development of more accurate cardiovascular risk scoring tools for RA patients accounting for RA characteristics and treatment.
